Display systems for design applications normally take the form of screens. Designers often make use of multiple screens for the concurrent and simultaneous display of different types of design data.
For display purposes designers often use projection systems for large scale presentations.
In special cases 3D (stereoscopic) displays are employed within virtual reality systems to provide a fully immersive experience of a structure that exists only within it's design system.

Other input devices include digitising tablets with puck- or pen-type cursor tools, design-oriented trackball devices, 3D sculpting devices and 3D scanning systems.

Direct creation of physical objects from digital models using various freeform fabrication techniques and materials. Initially employed to create models and prototype parts, rapid prototyping technology is evolving into direct manufacturing technology where small scale manufacturing production can be conducted simply and efficiently.
Where complex 3D parts are created in solid modelling software or using 3D scan data, direct production entirely eliminates the requirement for drawings in the traditional project documentation sense as all data required in the production phase is entirely electronic and fed directly to the manufacturing equipment.
