Industry Pioneers Dick Sowar and Bruce Morgan Team-up to License Innovative 3D Software Technology
March 31, 2010 - Boulder, Colorado - MS3D Technologies LLC. (MS3D Tech), an engineering software consultancy based in Boulder, Colorado with industry-leading expertise in the development and licensing of sophisticated 3D modeling applications, announces it has been selected by FreeDesign Inc. of Longmont, Colorado to sell the rights to its FreeDimension® 3D surface modeling technology. FreeDesign's patented, curve-based surface modeling technology is the industry's leading "free hand" 3D CAD design technology - the 3D virtual equivalent of pencil on paper design capability. It won the prestigious CADwire Tech Innovator Award in 2007 and has been broadly recognized in the industry as a potentially transforming innovation in 3D design software. The technology, marketed as FreeDimension, was originally inspired by Procter and Gamble which was seeking an intuitive state-of-the-art industrial design tool. Since 2006 it has been in the process of development and productization by FreeDesign, Inc. FreeDimension was released to the public in 2007 and is available for download at www.freedesign3d.com. "We funded the initial development of FreeDimension because we were looking for surface creation using arbitrary curve networks that more naturally express the designers' intent," said Steve D'Amico, Design Director at Procter & Gamble. "I believe that a combination of a technology like curve-based design and platforms like the iPad could 'democratize design' in a very compelling way." The global recession has created challenges to continued financing of product development, leading FreeDesign to explore partnerships with companies in the Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D Animation and Computer Graphics markets. MS3D Tech has been selected to identify and select partners who recognize the opportunity for product innovation the technology promises and who have the capacity to bring it to market quickly. Many industry observers feel there has been a dearth of product innovation in the CAD industry over the past decade. As Dr. Joel Orr, industry analyst at Orr Associates International, stated in Machine Design (December 09) "The engineering-automation industry is seizing up from old age." He points out that it has been a long time since the industry has seen true CAD innovation. Says Dr. Orr, "But there are some glimmers of innovation popping up, like FreeDesign. FreeDesign's unique approach to 3D surface modeling might provide a foundation for new-generation 3D modeling applications, especially in emerging markets related to fast growing platforms such as the iPhone, iPad and Tablet Pcs." MS3D Tech has the mandate to explore a range of business models, including both exclusive and non-exclusive licensing options and corporate recapitalization. The objective is to find partner companies who can innovate around the technology, productize it expeditiously, and bring it to market quickly. "I have been involved with FreeDesign's technology since 2006, and its patented approach to creating 3D models using curve-based modeling techniques and n-sided surface patches remains unique in the industry" said Mr. Roger Pomainville, chairman of FreeDesign. "MS3D Technologies understands our technology and its value in both traditional CAD and emerging mass markets. I am confident they will find development partners who will ensure the technology is available to users in engineering, animation, computer graphics and 3D TV in new and innovative ways." MS3D Tech will immediately initiate discussions with a wide range of potential technology partners using its broad industry contacts in the engineering software marketplace. The objective is to finalize licensing arrangements by the summer of 2010. "There is a window of opportunity for an intuitive, freehand 3D model creation application in the Apple and Tablet PC marketplaces" said Mr. Richard (Dick) Sowar, technology partner at MS3D Tech. "FreeDimension is a lightweight, robust and proven platform that will give companies looking to enter this market a huge head start". MS3D Technology LLC., is an engineering software consultancy established by former Spatial Technology executives Dick Sowar and Bruce Morgan that focuses on product and business model development for 3D software applications. The founders combine over 40 years of experience in the development and marketing of sophisticated engineering and related 3D software with companies including Spatial Technologies, PlanetCAD, Graftek, Ansys, Geomenon and FreeDesign. Founded in 2009, MS3D Tech is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. |
